RALEIGH—Josh Stein became North Carolina’s 76th governor on New Year’s Day in a brief ceremony inside the State Capitol. Stein, the state’s first Jewish governor, took his oath on a Tanakh held by his wife, Anna. Outgoing Governor Roy Cooper attended the event in the old Senate chambers.
Supreme Court Chief Justice Paul Newby administered the oath, and Secretary of State Elaine Marshall oversaw the ceremonial transfer of the state seal. Stein, who defeated Mark Robinson in November, pledged to focus on public schools, safety, and hurricane recovery.
Public Celebration Planned for Jan. 11
The public will gather in Raleigh on January 11 for Stein’s ceremonial address. Events include a block party on Fayetteville Street and an inaugural ball at Marbles Kids Museum.

A Call for Unity
During his remarks, Stein emphasized collaboration across political divides. “The time is now to build a safer, stronger North Carolina,” he said, highlighting education, personal freedoms, and disaster relief as priorities.
Rabbi Judith Schindler closed the ceremony with a benediction, saying, “A community is too heavy for one person to carry alone.”
