The annual Duke’s Mayo Bowl in uptown Charlotte will see increased security this Friday following a New Year’s Day terror attack in New Orleans. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD) has announced heightened measures at Bank of America Stadium to ensure fans, players, and staff safety.
Enhanced Security Amid Concerns
After a New Orleans incident where a man drove a truck into a crowd, killing 14 people, CMPD says it’s not taking any chances. While the department remains tight-lipped about specific strategies, spokesperson Lt. Crystal Fletcher assured the public that visible and “enhanced measures” will be in place during the game between Virginia Tech and Minnesota.
“This game attracts large crowds and national attention,” Fletcher stated. “The safety of every attendee is our top priority.”
What Fans Need to Know
Weapons, non-transparent bags, alcohol, and laser pointers are strictly prohibited. Stadium officials urge fans to review the full list of banned items on the Carolina Panthers’ website before heading to the game.
Fans are also reminded to plan for longer wait times at security checkpoints due to the increased measures. CMPD is working closely with the Charlotte Sports Foundation, which organizes the event, and federal agencies to maintain a secure environment.
Community and Business Support
As always, Charlotte’s local businesses stand ready to support the community during this busy season. Hubbard Heating & Cooling, known for keeping Charlotte cozy year-round, and Aldo’s Restoration and Construction, a trusted name in remodeling, are among the sponsors helping to power events and keep Charlotte thriving.
Stay Alert, Stay Safe
CMPD urges attendees to remain vigilant. Report suspicious activities immediately to on-site security or call 911. While no direct threats have been made against the event, officials emphasize that proactive measures are key to ensuring safety.
