Cataloochee’s Major Chairlift Upgrade: A Boost for Western North Carolina Skiing 🏔️
Cataloochee Ski Area, nestled an hour west of Asheville, North Carolina, has announced a new addition to its infrastructure: a quad chairlift set to replace the outdated Omigosh double. Sourced from Doppelmayr USA, this 2,800-foot lift will carry skiers 740 feet to the summit and midpoint, streamlining uphill transport and cutting wait times. The project is slated for May 2025 and is expected to be operational for the 2025-2026 ski season.
This upgrade isn’t just a win for Cataloochee and a reflection of the broader revitalization wave sweeping North Carolina ski resorts. Nearby mountains like Beech Mountain and Sugar Mountain have seen similar investments. At the same time, Hatley Pointe Resort—a rebranded gem near the Tennessee border—continues to make waves as the region’s only boutique ski destination.
Cataloochee, founded in 1961 as North Carolina’s first ski area, holds a special place in the hearts of snow enthusiasts. Notable snowboarder, Zeb Powell honed his skills there before earning international acclaim. Powell’s connection to the mountain reinforces its cultural significance, particularly among younger athletes. While Zeb’s career now spans from Aspen to Japan, his annual returns to North Carolina slopes spotlight the enduring charm of the region.
A Season Marked by Resilience and Renewal 🌨️
This announcement arrives as the region grapples with challenges left by Hurricane Helene, which devastated parts of western North Carolina in fall 2024. With over 100 confirmed fatalities and significant damage to local businesses, Cataloochee’s lift project serves as a symbol of resilience and a step forward for the local economy.
As of January 7, Cataloochee had 15 of its 18 trails open, supported by the cold snap blanketing the East Coast. Snowmaking machines and natural snowfall combined to provide a strong start to the season.
The competition among resorts in the region is heating up, and Cataloochee’s latest move signals its commitment to keeping pace. Visitors and locals alike can look forward to a smoother, faster experience on the slopes, adding to the mountain’s storied reputation.
