District 6: Same seat, old faces, fresh drama.

Former Charlotte Council Members Vie for District 6 Interim Appointment

The race to temporarily fill Charlotte’s vacant District 6 seat, opened by Council Member Tariq Bokhari’s departure to serve as Deputy Administrator at the Federal Transit Administration, brought familiar faces back to the dais Thursday. Former city council members Andy Doolin and Edwin Peacock each made their case, promising experienced leadership and distinct visions for Charlotte’s near future.

Andy Doolin: Hands-On Approach

Andy Doolin, who served from 2005 to 2013, emphasized his deep familiarity with District 6. “I know every corner and most front doors,” Doolin told the council, promising an immediate impact with minimal ramp-up time. Doolin, who previously worked extensively in community service roles, highlighted achievements such as Charlotte Douglas Airport’s development and vowed to personally tackle community concerns, specifically potholes and neighborhood safety.

“Give me this seat, and you’ll finally have someone to blame for traffic,” joked Doolin, advocating for quick responses to constituents’ concerns.

Edwin Peacock: Strategic Perspective

Edwin Peacock, a former at-large council member from 2007 to 2011 with a background in mortgage lending and financial education, stressed his broader strategic approach. Peacock recounted major city decisions during his tenure, notably the controversial yet transformative half-cent transit sales tax referendum. He urged the current council not to underestimate voter fatigue regarding the upcoming one-cent transit tax, emphasizing that clear and consistent communication would be essential.

Peacock also spoke candidly about the personal support he received from fellow council members during family challenges, underscoring the importance of empathy and unity within the council.

Contrasting Styles, Common Goals

While Doolin offered immediate practical solutions and grassroots engagement, Peacock presented a more holistic and reflective approach. Council members questioned both extensively. Mayor Pro Tem Dante Anderson specifically inquired about what unique contributions they would bring. Peacock cited his strategic foresight, whereas Doolin underscored his deep district-level knowledge and responsiveness.

Council Member Victoria Watlington directly asked how each candidate would adapt to demographic shifts in District 6. Peacock highlighted increased congestion and underscored the urgency for expanded public transit. Doolin reiterated the necessity of addressing basic quality-of-life issues first, stating that everyday community concerns remain constant despite demographic shifts.

Community Voices and Concerns

Audience members expressed significant interest during the forum, raising concerns about public safety, neighborhood infrastructure, and transparency in governance. Several residents noted the importance of choosing a candidate familiar with ongoing local issues to effectively advocate during the interim period.

Council’s Next Steps

Council members agreed on the necessity of further internal discussions ahead of Monday’s vote, a motion led by Council Member LaWanna Mayfield. The interim seat will be filled until elections in the fall, with both Doolin and Peacock affirming they do not intend to run.
