Duke Energy Names Harry Sideris CEO, Lynn Good to Retire

Lynn Good Retires from Duke Energy, Harry Sideris to Lead the Energy Giant Forward

In a significant leadership shake-up at Duke Energy, the company revealed Monday that Harry Sideris, president of the Charlotte-based utility giant, will take over as CEO on April 1. Sideris, 53, succeeds Lynn Good, retiring after over two decades with the company, including nearly a dozen years as CEO. Good’s departure marks the end of an era at one of the largest employers in the Queen City.

Good’s tenure was marked by landmark events, including the 2014 coal ash spill and the 2022 attack on the company’s power grid. Under her leadership, Duke expanded its clean energy efforts, setting aggressive goals for carbon reduction. Her retirement, however, has been framed by Duke Energy as a peaceful transition, with no disputes regarding the company’s direction or operations. Good’s legacy includes steering Duke Energy through regulatory battles, environmental crises, and strategic investments in renewable energy.

Sideris, who has worked at Duke Energy for 29 years, has served in various leadership roles, most recently as president since April 2024. He has a background in operations, customer service, and regulatory affairs and was instrumental in Duke’s acquisition of Progress Energy in 2012. According to Ted Craver, Duke’s lead independent director, his appointment to CEO was the result of a careful multiyear selection process.

Sideris has expressed his gratitude for Good’s mentorship and voiced confidence in Duke’s future. “The opportunities before us and our employees’ steadfast commitment to our customers make our future bright,” he said in a statement.

The board also named Craver as independent chair of the Duke Energy Board of Directors, effective the same day Sideris assumes the CEO role. Craver, a longtime board member, will oversee Duke’s leadership as the company navigates the rapidly evolving energy landscape.

Duke Energy’s financial details about Sideris’ compensation were also made public, revealing an annual base salary of $1.3 million, plus incentive-based opportunities. The company, which serves 8.4 million customers across the Carolinas, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Kentucky, reported operating revenues of $29 billion and assets totaling $176.9 billion. The upcoming CEO transition is a major milestone for Duke, one of the region’s top employers and a key player in the broader energy sector.

Commentary: The Future of Duke Energy Under Sideris’ Leadership

As Duke Energy turns the page on Good’s leadership, Sideris faces the task of building on a complex legacy. He must balance Duke’s ambitions for clean energy with the realities of its vast customer base and aging infrastructure. Additionally, as energy security concerns become increasingly important in the wake of last year’s grid attack, Sideris will need to ensure Duke’s preparedness for both technological disruptions and physical threats to its network.

The question remains: will Sideris continue the company’s push for carbon neutrality by 2050 at the pace Good set, or will he take a different path, perhaps one that balances environmental concerns with the economic pressures of serving millions of customers across multiple states? Duke’s future may hinge on his ability to navigate this delicate balance.
