Ashley Westwood stood over the ball in the 30th minute, rain sheeting sideways across Bank of America Stadium, and did what Ashley Westwood does: picked his spot and beat Andre Blake from distance, unassisted, to give Charlotte FC a 1-0 lead they would carry into halftime.
Sixty minutes later, the lead had been lost and won back within two minutes, eight yellow cards had been shown, and Charlotte had secured a 2-1 victory over the Philadelphia Union that moved them to 3-1-2 on the season with 11 points — third in the Eastern Conference.
Wilfried Zaha's 80th-minute winner, set up by Pep Biel and Kellyn de la Torre, came less than 120 seconds after Danley Jean Jacques had equalized for Philadelphia. Charlotte are now unbeaten at home in 2026: three wins and a draw at Bank of America Stadium, outscoring opponents 11-3. On the road, they remain winless at 0-1-1.
The First Half: Westwood and Weather
Charlotte created early. Pep Biel fired from the box in the seventh minute and missed left. Djibril Diani did the same moments later. The pattern was clear — Charlotte had the ball, had the angles, and could not convert.
Then the rain arrived. Not drizzle — torrential, sideways, April-in-Charlotte rain that turned the pitch slick and the tackles heavier. The card count started early: Frankie Westfield in the 12th, Diani in the 19th, Zaha in the 42nd.
Westwood's goal in the 30th was clean enough to cut through the conditions: an unassisted strike that beat Blake and broke the deadlock. Zaha nearly doubled the lead in the 44th, but Blake — a three-time MLS Goalkeeper of the Year and the Union's all-time leader in saves — denied him with a save that kept the deficit at one heading into the break.
Four yellow cards in 47 minutes. That kind of night.
Two Goals, Two Minutes
The second half settled into a cautious, scoreless grind until Philadelphia pushed forward late. The Union brought on Cavan Sullivan — the 16-year-old homegrown midfielder who became the youngest player in major American professional sports history when he debuted at 14 — in the 77th minute for Indiana Vassilev.
Sullivan needed one minute to change the match.
In the 78th, he played a through ball to Jean Jacques, who finished from close range for his first goal of the season. It was Sullivan's first career MLS assist. Philadelphia had been building pressure for 10 minutes — Nathan Harriel's yellow in the 76th was a foul born of urgency — and Charlotte's back line had been sitting deeper than it had all night.
Less than two minutes later, Zaha answered. Biel and de la Torre combined to spring him, and Zaha finished to restore the lead at 2-1. The crowd that had stayed through the rain got the result they came for.
Philadelphia had one more look. Sullivan fired wide in the 86th on what would have been a second direct goal involvement in eight minutes. Kristijan Kahlina picked up a yellow in the 87th. Sullivan got one in stoppage time. Referee Drew Fischer blew the final whistle with eight cards on the sheet and zero reds — a minor miracle given the conditions.
The Season Through Six
Charlotte have won three of their last four matches, with the lone blemish a scoreless draw against Inter Miami. The Westwood-Biel-Zaha triangle in the attacking third continues to produce: between them, they account for the bulk of Charlotte's 12 goals through six matches. Biel, whose early-season case for MVP was laid out in Thursday's quarter-pole analysis, added another assist Saturday.
The Zaha loan from Galatasaray runs through June 30. Nights like Saturday — a decisive goal two minutes after an equalizer, in the rain, in front of a crowd that needed a reason to stay — are the argument for making it permanent.
