Schedule notes
The Charlotte Checkers were a man down, tied 1-1 with under five minutes left in their home opener Friday night, when they scored the goal that beat the Hartford Wolf Pack 2-1 at Bojangles Coliseum.
Hunter St. Martin scored it with 3:46 left, finishing Johnny Beecher's pass after Hartford turned the puck over in the Charlotte zone and the two broke the other way with only one defender back. Hartford had the extra man because Charlotte forward Cole Reinhardt was called for goaltender interference at 15:10 of the third period. Defenseman Donovan Sebrango had put Charlotte ahead 1:38 into the second period, his first goal for the Checkers, and Bryce McConnell-Barker tied it for Hartford at 8:50 of the second. Goalie Kirill Gerasimyuk stopped 27 of 28 shots.
The Checkers, the American Hockey League affiliate of the Florida Panthers, opened the season with four games on the road and have now won two in a row for the first time this season. They also have not given up a goal while a man down: opponents have had 18 power plays against them, and Charlotte has stopped all 18, which the club says is the best start in franchise history.
"It's not always pretty, but sometimes you want to make sure to dig in and get the job done, and we did that tonight on the PK," head coach Geordie Kinnear said of the penalty kill.
Gerasimyuk has allowed two goals in two starts this season, both wins. Hartford has lost four in a row.
The teams play again at 6 p.m. Saturday at Bojangles Coliseum.
