Kyle Larson started 30th at Richmond Raceway on Saturday night and finished sixth. Then he left Virginia, flew to Iowa and led all 50 laps of the Knoxville Nationals.
Richmond was recovery. Knoxville was control.
The second race was not supposed to include him. Larson had won Thursday's Knoxville qualifying feature, putting Paul Silva's No. 57 on the pole for Saturday's championship event. His Hendrick Motorsports obligations at Richmond were expected to keep him away. The Knoxville crew's contingency was for Trevor Canales to start the car and park it.
"I knew I wouldn't be able to race, but there was still that glimmer of hope with the rain in the forecast," Larson said afterward.
The rain stayed over Knoxville. During the NASCAR Cup Series race, crew chief Cliff Daniels told Larson the delay had opened a possible route to Iowa.
Larson still had 400 laps to finish at Richmond Raceway. He took the No. 5 Chevrolet from 30th to sixth.
His flight landed while Knoxville's C-main was underway. Larson reached the raceway before the B-main, too late for the feature hot laps but in time to take his place on the pole.
Once the green flag fell, the travel drama ended. Larson started first and stayed there. Sheldon Haudenschild and Kasey Kahne each tried to close the gap, but neither found enough speed. Larson won $200,000 and his fourth Knoxville Nationals title in the last six runnings.
The victory completed a perfect sprint-car week with Silva. They won the Capitani Classic on Sunday, the Front Row Challenge on Monday, Thursday's qualifying feature and the Nationals.
Getting to Knoxville required the weather, Hendrick's help and timing precise enough to put Larson at the track before the B-main. Winning required the part Larson and Silva controlled.
At Richmond, Larson gained 24 positions. At Knoxville, nobody gained one on him.
