The Carolina Panthers have until 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, August 30 to reduce their Active/Inactive List to no more than 53 players. This tracker records the club's exact transaction designations, the initial 53, waiver claims and practice-squad formation without presenting a projected roster as an official decision.

As rechecked August 22, the Panthers' official roster still lists 88 active players, one player on Active/Non-Football Illness, two on Active/Physically Unable to Perform and three on Reserve/Injured. Linebacker Mapalo Mwansa has an international-player roster exemption, which explains why the camp list can sit one player above the ordinary 90-player limit.

The useful number is not a guessed list of “locks.” It is the number of decisions still unresolved, the official designation attached to each move and the position groups those decisions affect.

Last verified: August 22, 2026, 8:41 p.m. ET against the Panthers' official roster and transaction record. Official records can change at any time.

The deadlines

Date and time What happens Why it matters
Aug. 30, before 6 p.m. ET Clubs must reduce to a maximum of 53 players on the Active/Inactive List. Carolina must also resolve players who remain on active/PUP or active/NFI.
Aug. 31, 1 p.m. ET Waiver claims from final reduction are due. Carolina's initial 53 can change immediately through waiver claims and subsequent moves.
After the Aug. 31 personnel notice Clubs may form practice squads. The 2026 limit is 17 when one qualifying international player occupies the reserved international position.

There are no official interim reductions to 85 and 80 on the 2026 calendar. The controlling NFL operations calendar lists one final reduction to 53 on August 30.

Current roster accounting

Official designation Count Deadline treatment
Active 88 Counts toward the camp limit.
Active/Physically Unable to Perform 2 Counts until Carolina makes the applicable deadline decision.
Active/Non-Football Illness 1 Counts until Carolina makes the applicable deadline decision.
International exemption 1 of the 88 active players Exempt through the reduction to 53.
Reserve/Injured 3 Does not count in the 91-player active-status total.

Working count: 91 players appear across the three active-status lists. Mwansa's exemption makes that 90 against the ordinary camp limit. The raw headcount must fall by 38 to reach a 53-player Active/Inactive List. Another way to express the same deadline is 37 ordinary-limit reductions plus a separate decision on Mwansa's exempt position.

Four questions the official moves must answer

How many quarterbacks appear on Carolina's initial Active/Inactive List?

The August 22 Active list contains Bryce Young, Kenny Pickett, Kyle Trask and Haynes King. The deadline update will record the official final count and designation for any player removed from that list. Preseason snap order will not be presented as a roster decision.

How many roster places go to tight ends and receivers?

The August 22 Active list contains seven tight ends and 11 receivers. Those are starting counts, not a depth-chart judgment. The deadline update will identify the confirmed moves in each group and any official reserve designation that changes the roster math.

How are the active/PUP and active/NFI cases resolved?

Ikem Ekwonu and Tershawn Wharton are on Active/Physically Unable to Perform; Taylor Moton is on Active/Non-Football Illness. The NFL requires Carolina to make an applicable roster decision at final reduction. Mercury will record the exact designation and its Active/Inactive List effect without inferring Week 1 availability from the transaction alone.

Where does Carolina retain defensive depth?

The August 22 Active list contains 42 defenders, including 11 cornerbacks and 15 players in Mercury's combined edge/linebacker group. The deadline update will report final position-group counts and exact transactions rather than converting preseason usage into an announced decision.

How this tracker will change

  • At final reduction, this page will add the official initial 53 and preserve the exact designation for every move.
  • After the August 31 waiver notice, it will preserve the initial 53 as a dated state and separately record waiver claims and subsequent roster changes.
  • Practice-squad contracts will appear in their own section rather than being counted as part of the Active/Inactive List.
  • The same URL will remain canonical. Mercury will not create competing “final 53” or “practice squad” articles.

What Mercury will not do

  • Publish a projected 53 as if it were official.
  • Repeat transaction rumors without an on-record or official source.
  • Carry an injury label forward without a new verification date.
  • Describe every removal as a “cut” when the official move is waived/injured, released with an injury settlement, traded or assigned to a reserve list.
