A home's curb appeal makes the house feel inviting, adds to the look of the street and helps when it goes on the market. Decorating the porch for the season is one way to get there. Letting Christine Davies of The Seasonal Porch Stylist do it is another.
From Brooklyn to Waxhaw
While Davies and her husband were living in Brooklyn, N.Y., they decided they wanted a better life for their growing family. They found Waxhaw on YouTube, visited in February 2017 and "fell in love." Both in banking, they found positions at Wells Fargo and had moved by summer.
What began as a hobby became a career. "Growing up, my mom always did a little something for the seasons and holidays, especially around Christmas, and I guess it rubbed off on me," she says. Her house in downtown Waxhaw has a large front porch where the family spends a lot of time. "Our porch, the entryway to our home, should be as inviting as the inside," she says. Inspired by the entrances in her husband's hometown, London, she decided there was no reason homes and businesses in Charlotte could not look just as welcoming.
How it works
Davies is the lead designer and hands-on with installation, working one-on-one with homeowners and businesses. Many of her designs include elements she makes herself, from floral installations to holiday garlands.
The business is busiest in fall and the run-up to the holidays, and she finds about 20 clients at a time is the "sweet spot." A consultation covers interests, needs, budget and timeline. "Within a week, I provide an inspiration board based on their vision, and once they approve, I get to work," she says. "As a designer, I always try to include an element of surprise for my clients." She tries to finalize holiday designs in July and August and fall designs in May and June, so she encourages clients to book install dates early. Projects typically start at around $1,200.
"I offer a very curated service," she says. "Whether you need furniture, have many stairs or desire special lighting, I want your welcome to feel exactly how you want it, season after season, right down to the door mat."
Spring, and the subscription
Most of her work falls in September through December, but she likes waking up porches in spring too. For clients who want the porch handled all year, she offers a subscription. "Our subscribers receive priority throughout the seasons, and they also receive a price break. Plus, I get to know their porch intimately," she says. "This is one of those 'I hit the easy button' decisions."
She works with real and faux elements across a range of textures: foliage, wreath, lights, doormat and the small details. A gallery of her work is at theseasonalporchstylist.com. A paid Partner Spotlight.
