Folks, Barzee Blama came off the bench in the 84th minute on Friday night at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex in Matthews. The striker had not appeared in a home match since May 19, 2025. More than fifteen months, and a knee injury in between. This was only his second match back all season.
In the fifth minute of stoppage, academy midfielder Sebastian Ventura put him in at the top of the box. Blama ran into it and hit the near post.
First professional goal.
Two minutes later Adrian Mendoza, another academy midfielder, faked his defender, opened up the space, and put one off the post and in, set up by Charlotte FC's Baye Coulibaly. Crown Legacy 4, Chicago Fire FC II 0.
Now, the honest framing before the celebration gets going: Chicago played the last half hour with ten men. Damian Nigg was sent off in the 63rd, and both of those stoppage-time goals came against a short-handed side in a match Crown Legacy already led 2-0. It was a rout, and part of the reason it was a rout is that Chicago spent a third of it a man down.
But a kid out of the academy setting up a striker fifteen months removed from his last home appearance, and a second academy kid finishing the thing off, is exactly what this club exists to produce. Crown Legacy is Charlotte FC's development team in MLS NEXT Pro, the league MLS runs to season its young players. On Friday the last two goals were scored by the players it was built for.
Nathan Richmond Is Having the Season
Here is the part that matters most, and it is not the 4-0.
Richmond made the first goal and scored the second. In the 34th, coming out of the first-half hydration break, Crown Legacy went back to a free kick they had earned before the stoppage and Richmond flicked a cross to Andrew Johnson in the box. Johnson put it into the roof of the net, his third of the season. In the 42nd, Andrej Subotic took a throw-in near the midfield line, turned to lose his marker, and found Richmond with grass in front of him. Richmond beat his man one-on-one and finished low past the keeper.
That assist was his tenth of the year, and he is one of only three players in the whole of MLS NEXT Pro to reach double digits in assists this season. The goal was his eighth. Eight and ten is eighteen goal contributions, and it is the single biggest reason this team is sitting where it is sitting.
Where They Actually Stand
I read the league's own table Monday morning rather than doing the arithmetic myself, and here it is.
Crown Legacy are first in the Eastern Conference on 54 points from 26 matches: 14 wins, 5 losses, and 7 matches that finished level and went to a shootout. Sixty-three scored, 36 allowed, plus-27. At home they are 9-2-2.
The points look strange until you know the rules. This league gives three for a win in regulation, two for winning the shootout, one for losing it. Fourteen wins, five shootout wins and two shootout losses is 54. That is the math.
Chattanooga are second on 47 from 25, which is seven back with a match in hand.
Crown Legacy clinched the East's first playoff spot on August 23, and the league table still carries the small x beside their name that marks a club as through to the postseason. They remain the only Eastern side with it.
Friday also answered the previous Sunday, when head coach Kevin Sawchak's team went to Orlando City B and lost 2-3. And if the shape of it feels familiar, it should: in July they beat this same Chicago side 3-2 at home coming off a defeat, and by the end of that month they had the conference lead.
The Rest of the Ledger
Isaac Walker kept the clean sheet, the club's eighth this season and the tenth of his MLS NEXT Pro career. Subotic picked up his fifth assist, Ventura and Coulibaly their second apiece. Mendoza has now scored in back-to-back matches. Free agent signing Ty Barnett made his debut off the bench. It was the club's fourteenth win of the year and its ninth at home.

Carolina Core FC come to Matthews on Saturday, September 12, for the final home match of the regular season. Kickoff is 7 p.m., admission is free, and it is also Pups at the Pitch, so the dogs are invited.
