Second place came to Matthews on Sunday with a four-point gap to close. It went home beaten 3-1, and since a win in this league is worth three points, the four-point gap is now SEVEN.
Crown Legacy FC, Charlotte FC's development side, took down Chattanooga FC at the Mecklenburg County Sportsplex and became the first team in the Eastern Conference to clinch a place in the 2026 MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs. MLS NEXT Pro is the developmental league run by Major League Soccer, and Chattanooga, an independent club, arrived as the nearest pursuer in the table. Not anymore.
The goals tell you how it went. In the 26th minute, defender Mikah Thomas whipped a cross from the left flank to the back post, and midfielder Andrej Subotic met it with his head at the goal line for his third of the season. Five minutes into the second half, Hugo Mbongue jumped on a bad back-pass toward the Chattanooga goalkeeper, intercepted the play, and finished it himself. Daniel Mangarov pulled one back for Chattanooga in the 63rd off a rebound. And in the 83rd, Mbongue combined with winger Nathan Richmond on the break and finished a one-on-one to close it out.
That's goals 12 and 13 on the season for Mbongue, tying Richmond for the team lead in goal contributions (goals plus assists) at 16 apiece. The assist was Richmond's ninth, which has him tied for second among every player in the league.
And because this is a development team, the box score doubles as a progress report. Isaac Walker, who signed a Charlotte FC first-team contract back in February, started Sunday in goal. The same pipeline moved Rodolfo Aloko and Aron John onto first-team deals earlier this year. The team exists to build players for the big club, and the players it is building just locked up a playoff berth ahead of everybody else in the conference.
Here's where the table stands, read off the league's own standings page Wednesday morning: 51 points from 24 matches, first in the East, seven clear of Chattanooga with both clubs on 24 played. The record is 13 wins, 4 losses and 7 draws, and the points work like this: the league settles every draw from the penalty spot, with an extra point for the shootout winner. Thirteen wins at three points, five shootout wins at two, two shootout losses at one. Fifty-one. The official table now prints its clinch marker next to exactly one name in the Eastern Conference.

Four matches left in the regular season, and back in late July, Crown Legacy led the East with a game in hand. Five weeks later, the lead is seven and the playoff place is banked. The ticket is punched. The seeding is not. (Good week for the organization all around, by the way: as of this week, only two players in MLS have more goal contributions than the first team's Pep Biel.)
Second place came to town to make it a race. Crown Legacy ended the conversation instead.
