Charlotte trailed 6-0, put up five in a single inning, and lost by one. The series clincher is now Sunday.
The Charlotte Knights fell behind 6-0 to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp by the middle innings on Saturday night, rallied with a five-run sixth, and lost 6-5 at VyStar Ballpark in front of 5,810 fans. Charlotte had taken a 3-1 lead in the six-game series with Friday's 8-5 win. Game six is Sunday afternoon, and the Knights still need one win to clinch.
How Jacksonville Got Six Runs Before Anybody Else Got One
The first run came on a fielding error in the bottom of the fourth. With two out, Agustín Ramírez doubled. Kemp Alderman hit a groundball to Charlotte shortstop Jacob Gonzalez, the throw didn't make it, Ramírez scored, and Jacksonville led 1-0.
The fifth was worse. Charlotte starter Hagen Smith opened the inning with a hit-by-pitch and two walks. Jesús Bastidas cleared the bases with a three-run double. Deyvison De Los Santos followed with an RBI double of his own. Two batters later, a Ramírez groundout to second brought in De Los Santos. Five runs, no outs in between. Jacksonville led 6-0.
Smith finished with four innings: six runs, five earned, two walks, three strikeouts. His record fell to 0-3.
The Knights Almost Erased It in One Frame
Charlotte put runners on first and second in the top of the sixth for LaMonte Wade Jr. Wade lined an RBI single back up the middle, scoring Braden Montgomery. Oliver Dunn walked to load the bases. Korey Lee doubled to deep right field for two runs. Caden Connor singled over the shortstop for another. Then Jacksonville reliever Tyler Zuber balked Lee in from third. Five runs in the inning. The deficit was one.
Adisyn Coffey, Lucas Sims, and Zach Franklin combined for four shutout innings out of the bullpen to keep it there.
It stayed there. Charlotte had two on with two out in the top of the seventh and didn't score. Jacksonville's pitching staff retired the next seven Knights hitters in order. Jack Ralston, on for the eighth, recorded the final six outs without surrendering a baserunner and picked up his second save of the season.
The Series Is Still Charlotte's to Win
Both clubs are now 19-19 on the season. The series goes to Sunday with Charlotte still leading 3-2 and needing one more win to take the road set. Jacksonville sends right-hander Josh White (2-0, 1.62 ERA) to the mound. Charlotte counters with left-hander Shane Murphy (1-0, 5.40).
First pitch is 2:05 p.m. ET. A 2 p.m. Mother's Day matinee, with a series win on the line for a team that has been in front of it since Tuesday.
They couldn't finish it Saturday. There is one game left.
