The Carolina Panthers announced Friday, the morning after a 27-19 loss at Green Bay, that they had parted ways with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and given his job to their defensive line coach.
Todd Wash will be the interim defensive coordinator and will call the defensive plays, the team said. Defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley is also out. Head coach Dave Canales announced the changes in a team release that gave no reason for them.
Carolina is 3-4 and has allowed 193 points in seven games, according to the NFL's standings, including 59 in the season opener against Chicago and 43 in last Sunday's loss to Tampa Bay. Green Bay quarterback Jordan Love threw three touchdown passes on Thursday night.
Wash joined the Panthers' staff in 2023, the team said, and has coached for 31 years, 20 of them in the NFL. He was the Jacksonville Jaguars' defensive coordinator from 2016 through 2020, and in 2017 the Jaguars had the league's second-ranked defense and reached the AFC Championship Game, according to the team.
Outside linebackers coach and run game specialist AC Carter will add the defensive line to his duties. Secondary coach Renaldo Hill will continue to coach the defensive backs.
Canales is scheduled to speak with reporters by video at 3 p.m. Friday. The Panthers play their next game Sunday, Nov. 8, at home against the Denver Broncos.
