Carolina Ascent FC scored three times in the first 40 minutes on Saturday night, shut out Fort Lauderdale United FC, and took the club's first home win of the season. Head coach Philip Poole's summary of the evening: "This match could have been 6-6."
That is not the usual reaction to a 3-0 win, and Poole was not alone in it. Jill Aguilera, who scored the opening goal, said the same thing.
"With this game, we got the 3-0 win, but we certainly didn't play as well as we played last weekend, despite obviously getting a completely different result," Aguilera said.
Last weekend Carolina lost its home opener to Tampa Bay Sun FC. Poole was asked what needed tightening before the trip to Lexington, and answered by putting the two nights side by side.
"Last week was our best performance of the season. We were most dominant in possession, most dominant in terms of progression, and we lost," he said. "Tonight was a choppy performance, and we won 3-0. So it's funny. I'm not happy with this performance, but I'll take the three points."
Carolina is Charlotte's professional women's soccer club and the reigning runner-up of the Gainbridge Super League, which restarted in August on a new calendar: eight clubs, 14 matches, a regular season that ends November 28, the Players' Shield to whoever finishes first, and a final on December 12. Everything before this August, including the championship game Carolina lost in May, belongs to the season that came before.
Three Goals Before the Interval
The opener came in the 10th minute. Aguilera plays left back and pushes forward from it, and Jenna Butler picked her out over the top of the Fort Lauderdale defense. Aguilera touched the ball past Haley Craig, the Fort Lauderdale goalkeeper, as Craig came out, then finished into the empty net. It was her first goal of 2026.
The second arrived through a mistake by the visitors. Setting up for a goal kick, Craig and defender Ella Simpson miscommunicated, and Simpson handled the ball inside her own box. Mia Corbin took the penalty and scored it, her second of the season.
The third came in the 38th. Corbin, already on a goal, turned provider and played a through ball to Audrey Coleman, who timed her run, took a touch, and finished into the corner. Coleman's second of the season as well.
The Goalkeeper Had a Night Too
Poole's complaint was that the game ran both ways, and Sydney Martinez is the reason it did not cost anything. She made six saves and kept her second clean sheet of the season.
Fort Lauderdale's Kiara Locklear was the recurring threat. Martinez stopped her immediately after Aguilera's opener, then turned away a free kick from Kelsey Oyler in the same sequence. Locklear was slipped in alone later in the half and dragged her effort inches wide of the post. In the 40th she ran onto a ball behind the Carolina defense, and Martinez held her near post and pushed the shot away with her left hand. By the club's account Carolina's goalkeeper was not tested often after the interval; her fifth save came in the 72nd, when Fort Lauderdale's Sh'nia Gordon got down the left and floated a ball into the box.
A goalkeeper making six saves in a 3-0 win is the shape of the game Poole was describing.
Corbin, asked about moving between roles, gave the answer of a player who has been asked to do several jobs. "I'm just enjoying playing with my team, working hard and getting the results on the field," she said. "Roles are always changing, so I'm just trying to change with them and take advantage of it."
Lexington on Friday, and the Reason It Matters
Carolina goes to Lexington SC on Friday, and it is the rematch of a game the club has not had a chance to answer since May.
Lexington beat Carolina 3-1 after extra time in the Gainbridge Super League final on May 30, the first championship game in Carolina's history. Corbin put Carolina ahead and the lead held into halftime. Carolina controlled the match for an hour before McKenzie Weinert equalized in the 72nd. Regulation settled nothing. In extra time Regan Steigleder, named the final's Most Valuable Player, and Addie McCain scored, and a one-goal lead Carolina's way finished as a two-goal defeat. Lexington had come last the season before and left that night with the Players' Shield and the title.
The rematch kicks off at Lexington SC Stadium on Friday, September 11, per Lexington Sporting Club's ticket release.
Which makes Saturday a useful thing to have looked at closely. Carolina has beaten Fort Lauderdale 3-0 before, in May, away, in the last home match of Fort Lauderdale's season, and that 3-0 was the opposite shape of this one. Mackenzie George scored in the 63rd minute that night, Corbin in the 77th, Tyler Lussi in the 82nd. The whole thing arrived in the last half hour. On Saturday the same scoreline was finished before halftime and the goalkeeper worked through the rest.
Corbin scored in both, and in the final.
Poole thinks his team should have had more, not less. "I think we could have scored another two or three in the second half," he said. "So I'm quite happy with the performance, but there are parts of it where we've got to tighten up."
He is taking the three points either way.
