The Charlotte Knights' 12-game road trip ended Sunday in Moosic, Pennsylvania, home of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders, with a 9-5 loss and a 3-3 series split. The trip closed 5-7. Next: six straight home games at Truist Field against the Memphis Redbirds, beginning tonight.
Charlotte is 67-59 overall. The International League splits its season into two halves; the Knights went 42-33 in the first half and sit 25-26 in the second.
The trip's high point was the 9-8, ten-inning comeback that opened the Scranton series, when Charlotte trailed 8-1 in the eighth. After that game, the club noted the Knights are 9-2 in extra-inning games this season and have allowed one extra-inning run across the nine wins.
How it ended in Moosic
Sunday's finale turned on two innings. In the third, Junior Perez lost a routine fly ball in the sun and Scranton scored twice on the play. In the fourth, the RailRiders added three more with two out, capped by a three-run homer. Charlotte chipped back the rest of the afternoon: a Jason Matthews RBI single that scored Andy Weber, run-scoring hits from Joey Wiemer and Riley Unroe, a Rikuu Nishida RBI bunt, and a Weber solo homer in the ninth.
Weber closed the six games with two home runs, two doubles, and a .476 on-base percentage. Wiemer, in the finale, had his first multi-hit game as a Knight.
