Two friends who had worked on pools since they were teenagers decided in 1991 that the job could be done better. Thirty-five years later, their company is still built on that one idea.
Having a pool is often a homeowner's dream. The enthusiasm can fade once it becomes clear how much work it is to build one and keep it running. That gap is where B&B Pools of the Carolinas has made its name.
B&B was founded by Bryant Bedingfield and Troy Budenhagen, the two B's, in 1991, when they were 26 and 28. Both had worked on pools since their teens, and both thought the construction process could be better. The goal, Bedingfield says, was pools that were stronger and built to last, with better hydraulics and classic lines, even if that cost a little more. "Since then, we've gained a reputation of building the highest quality pools in the area," he says.
From building to servicing
Clients who liked how their pools were built began asking B&B to maintain them, too. After more than 10 years, Bedingfield and Budenhagen relented, building pools during the week and servicing them on Saturdays. Business grew until they hired a first employee, then a first full crew. B&B now employs almost 40 people and services pools across the greater Charlotte area, with most of its clients in south Charlotte neighborhoods such as SouthPark, Foxcroft, Dilworth, Myers Park and Eastover.
Most new business comes from referrals, from customers and from home builders B&B works with. Construction is led by Budenhagen and Kevin Crook. When a build is finished, they hand the homeowner to the service team, led by Matt Attal.
The first month, then every week
Attal's crew checks a new pool every day for a month to make sure the plaster is curing properly. "After that, we have 'pool school' to teach the homeowner how to use the equipment and automation controls so they can enjoy their pool," he says. "We then come once a week to keep it looking pristine, manage the water chemistry and confirm the equipment is functioning properly."
There is no tiered service menu. Every customer gets what the company calls white glove, concierge-level care. At a minimum, Attal says, that means consistency in the basics: skimming, brushing, vacuuming, clearing baskets, blowing off the deck, reading the chemistry and treating the water. "However, we don't stop there," he says. "We also do weekly equipment tests on pumps, filters, heaters, lights, etc. to find problems before our clients do."
B&B handles everything in-house. "We are the last call you have to make related to your pool, and we handle it from there," Attal says. The people answering the phones are seasoned pool professionals, too; the customer service team is CPO-certified (a Certified Pool Operator credential) and has worked in backyards cleaning and maintaining pools.
The next 35
B&B says it wants the next 35 years to look like the first: high quality, family-oriented service. "If you want quality and professionalism you can rely on, and you don't want your pool to become a headache, then you want us," Bedingfield says. "At the end of the day, it's a trust relationship. We consider it an honor to be invited into our clients' backyards, and we hope our clients know they are like family to us as well."
